Day 1 :

Rishikesh - Sari Village

Your journey to Chopta begins in the spiritual town of Rishikesh. Prepare for a scenic 7-hour drive to Sari, the starting point of the Deoriatal trek. En route, you'll pass the sacred confluence of the Alakananda and Bhagirathi rivers at Devprayag, an important Hindu pilgrimage site. The winding mountain roads offer stunning views of the lower Garhwal Himalayas, with the roaring river accompanying you all the way. As you approach Sari village, you'll be charmed by its tranquil setting amidst the mountains. Imagine around 100 houses dotting the slopes, surrounded by lush paddy fields. The warmth and hospitality of the locals add to the village's allure. On the horizon, you'll spot the majestic Chandrashila summit, offering a tantalizing glimpse of the adventure that lies ahead.

Day 2 :

Sari Village To Deoriatal

Begin your Chopta adventure with a 3km trek from Sari to Deoriatal. The well-marked trail features gentle climbs and descents, offering stunning views of mountains and valleys. After 30 minutes, you'll enter a vibrant forest of maple and rhododendrons. An hour later, you'll reach Deoriatal, a picturesque lake in the Garhwal Himalayas. Here, marvel at the breathtaking reflection of Mt. Chaukhamba in the crystal-clear water.

Day 3 :

Deoriatal To Baniyakund via Rohini Bugyal

This trek features breathtaking scenery, particularly the dense rhododendron forests adorned with red and pink blooms, most vibrant in March and April. The trail begins with a gentle ascent to Rohini Bugyal meadow, carpeted with rhododendrons. After a steep descent, the path alternates between ascents and descents leading to Baniyakund. As the rhododendrons thin out, you'll be rewarded with views of Chandrashila Peak in the distance and Sari village below. Keep an eye out for Himalayan wildlife, such as birds and foxes, and small shrines along the way. The trek concludes at the Baniyakund campsite, where you'll stay overnight.

Day 4 :

Summit Day: Drive From Baniyakund to Chopta and Trek to Tungnath & Chandrashila, Return to Baniyakund

The big day has arrived – summiting Chandrashila for sunrise! Begin your journey early to ensure you reach Tungnath on time. The well-defined trail winds through picturesque meadows and forests, eventually leading you to the Tungnath temple (closed in winter). This temple is one of the Panch Kedars, significant in Hindu mythology. From Tungnath, prepare for a steep climb to Chandrashila. Winter conditions may require crampons and gaiters for safety. Once you conquer the ascent, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan giants like Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Kamet. Witnessing the sunrise from Chandrashila's peak, adorned with a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is an unforgettable experience. Descend back to Chopta via the same route, concluding your trek with a drive back to Baniyakund, leaving you spellbound under a canopy of stars.

Day 5 :

Departure to Rishikesh

The journey concludes at Baniyakund, where you'll board the vehicles for a scenic 7-hour drive back to Rishikesh. This marks the end of your Himalayan adventure, leaving you with unforgettable memories!

The Deoriatal Chandrashila covers around 30 km in 4 days. (5 days including the drive to and from the trek). The altitude ranges from 6,560 ft in Sari all the way to Chandrashila top at 12,1000 ft.

How difficult is the Chandrashila trek?

The Deoriatal Chandrashila trek is classified as easy to moderate. It features minimal steep climbs, except for the final ascent to Chandrashila, and does not involve many long trekking days.

Compared to our other Himalayan treks, this is likely the easiest one. It is an excellent choice for beginners, families, and children.

However, it’s important to note that it is still a trek in the Himalayas, with challenges posed by the terrain, temperatures, and weather.

Is there snow in Chandrashila?

There is snow on the Chandrashila trek from December to the end of April. The first winter snowfall typically occurs by mid-December, and the trail usually remains accessible until the end of December.

During January and February, the peak winter months, the trails become difficult to access due to heavy snowfall. We recommend attempting the Chandrashila trek during these months if you are seeking a snowy adventure.

At the beginning of March, when the snow starts to melt slightly, it becomes one of the best times to do the trek. The optimal time for the Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek is during March and April. During these months, you can experience a combination of substantial snow, lush greenery, and vibrant rhododendron forests in full bloom.
